At 60 years of age, Diana Nyad successfully completed her triumphant return to long-distance swimming with a consecutive 24-hour swim through the Gulf Stream's open-water off the coast of Key West, Florida, without a shark cage. While the 24-hour swim is an enormous challenge, it's merely the beginning for Nyad. In August, she will attempt to achieve her life-long dream to be the first person to swim the 103 miles from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage.

Diana Nyad has caught the attention of the world recently by attempting to swim from Cuba to Florida. The trip is estimated to be about 103 miles, which is 13 miles longer than the direct path from Cuba to Florida. The extra distance takes into account any various to the swimming path to avoid any known areas where sharks are present. Diana Nyad is 61 years old, and has been training for the event for many months now. Back in the 70's she had tried to perform the swim, but without success.

After her second attempt in 2011, she almost gave up, referring to her dream as just a fairy tale. When she finally emerged from the water victoriously this past weekend, she had changed her tune. "I have three messages," she said. "One is we should never, ever give up. Two is you are never too old to chase your dreams. Three is it looks like a solitary sport, but it takes a team."
