Syria has been in the news almost daily for the past 17 months. But how many of us really understand what is happening there and how it matters to us? Father Nadim Nassar is the first and only Episcopal Priest of Syrian descent in the Church of England and recently granted me an interview. This fascinating and information exchange hopefully allowed me to strike the right balance between information, relevance to the readers, and historical context. I hope it helps those of us who aren't well-versed in Middle Eastern politics, to better understand the situation in Syria and how it affects us all.

At one time in history, Syria (also known as Greater Syria) covered a much larger area geographically than it does today. In ancient times, Greater Syria encompassed the modern day country, as well as Israel, parts of Jordan, Kurdistan, Israel, and Palestinian territories. It connected three continents as a crossroads of the Caspian Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Black Sea, and the Nile River.

Is the Iran-Syria War Pact Still Intact?

Several years ago, the Iranian and Syrian Leadership entered a very verbal and highly publicized war-pact, most likely due to the Iran's worry that it might someday in the future find itself in a war with Israel or the United States. Adding Syria's military might to Iran's could insure that an attack on either would be met with a much larger and stronger force than either one might muster by themselves.

The Silent War Between Israel And Syria

So what happened on the morning of September 6, 2007? Israel has instituted a news blackout beyond saying that Israeli soldiers demonstrated unusual courage in acting against Syria. Syria indicates that Israel violated its airspace and fired missals on ground targets. Iran has been absolutely quiet, very unusual for them. There has been no comment across the Middle East. Europe is quiet on the issue.
